Japanese production and sales outfit Pictures Dept has picked up worldwide rights to Shinji Aoyama’s upcoming adaptation of Shinya Tanaka’s award-winning novel Dog Eat Dog (Tomogui).
The as-yet-untitled project reunites Aoyama with producer Naoki Kai following their collaboration on Sad Vacation in 2007.
Produced by Kai’s Stylejam, the film will start shooting this autumn in Japan’s Kyushu region – the same location as Aoyama’s Eureka and Sad Vacation – for Japanese theatrical release in spring 2013.
Aoyama has also scripted the adaptation which follows a 17-year-old boy exploring his sexuality after witnessing his father’s abusive sex with a girlfriend.
Aoyama’s Eureka was awarded the FIPRESCI prize at the Cannes film festival in 2000, while Sad Vacation screened in the Venice film festival’s Orizzonti section. At last year’s Locarno film festival, Aoyama won the Special Golden Leopard for his Tokyo Park (Tokyo Koen) and his outstanding career.
Pictures Dept is also handling Sion Sono’s Land Of Hope and It’s Me, It’s Me, directed by Satoshi Miki (Adrift In Tokyo, Instant Swamp) and starring Kazuya Kamenashi. Also based on an award-winning novel, It’s Me, It’s Me is produced by J-Storm Movie and started shooting in early May.
