Up In The Air

Paramount Pictures International’s comedy drama Up In The Air began its overseas run as the highest new entry in Screen International’s chart, opening sixth after debuting in nine territories. Jason Reitman’s film, starring George Clooney as a businessman who travels the US firing people, took $5.8m between January 15-17 from 936 screens. Key results came from Australia ($1.6m from 173 screens) and the UK ($2.1m from 325 screens). Up In The Air opens in Brazil and Italy this weekend and rolls out further throughout February and March.

Sony Pictures Releasing International’s US-Germany co-production Friendship! opened in two territories, grossing $3.7m, including previews, from 419 screens for a $8,600 screen average. Markus Goller’s drama follows a young German who travels to San Francisco in search of his father.

A Spot Of Bother

Released in France, Belgium and Switzerland, Alfred Lot’s A Spot Of Bother (Une Petite Zone De Turbulences) took almost $2m from 349 screens. UGCDistribution is handling the comedy about a retired Englishman’s hypochondria, which stars Michel Blanc, Miou-Miou and Mélanie Doutey.

Bran Nue Dae

Australian production Bran Nue Dae opened sixth in its home market, taking $1.5m from 231 screens. Handled internationally by Bankside and released in
Australia by Roadside, the 1965-set musical stars Geoffrey Rush and tells of a young man whose idyllic existence is threatened when he is sent to a religious school.
