She aims to award a young film-maker from the Arab world.

Charlotte Rampling is to curate the Katrin Cartlidge Foundation Award for 2011, and has intimated that she will award a young film-maker from the Arab world. The annual prize is presented with the cash bursary at a red carpet gala event held during the Sarajevo Film Festival.

The annual award is given by the Foundation, which was founded after Cartlidge’s death (in 2002) to give new voices, perspectives and visions a chance to be seen and heard. A curator is appointed to choose the recipient of the award and to date curators have included Mike Leigh, Emily Watson, Stellan Skarsgard, Danis Tanovic, Simon McBurney, John Lyons and Juergen Teller.

In 2010, the Foundation chose to give the annual bursary to the new and only film school in Haiti, the Cine Institute Jacmel. Young Haitian film-maker Kesiah Jean came to Sarajevo last July to collect the award for her school. 

“The grant from the Katrin Cartlidge Foundation has enabled Haiti’s new generation of filmmakers to begin realizing their dreams,” said the school’s founder David Belle. “We are using this cherished funding to finance two films and, in doing so, we are bringing the hard work of our students to life and sharing their stories with the world.” 

Previous recipients of the award have included Juanita Wilson (2009) who went on to make the feature As If I’m Not There, Faruk Sabanovic (2008), who is currently in production on Bosnia’s first 3D animated feature Birds Like Us, and Cary Fukunaga (2007) who has directed two features Sin Nombre and Jane Eyre.
