Swedish actor-writer-director Erland Josephson, best known for his collaborations with Ingmar Bergman, has died in Stockholm aged 88.

Josephson is best known for his frequent collaborations with Ingmar Bergman, most notably in 1973 drama Scenes from a Marriage, but he also worked with Andrei Tarkovsky and Theo Angelopoulus.

In 1980, he directed and starred in drama Marmalade Revolution, which was nominated for a Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

He was leader of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm from 1966 to 1975. He also published novels, short stories, poetry and drama, and was director of several films.

Josephson is survived by his wife, Ulla Aberg, and five children.
