Sundance Selects is acquiring all US rights to Abbas Kiarostami’s Cannes competition entry Like Someone in Love.

The MK2 and Eurospace production stars Rin Takanashi, Tadashi Okuno and Ryo Kase and was produced by Marin Karmitz and Kenzo Horikoshi.

The film, which had its world premiere in Cannes last week, is about an old man and a young woman who meet in Tokyo and form a relationship over 24 hours.

Jonathan Sehring, president of Sundance Selects/IFC Films, said: “It’s a great honor to continue our relationship with Abbas Kiarostami after our successful collaboration with him on Certified Copy. His latest film is a beautiful, mysterious masterpiece that we hope to continue to build his following with in the US. We are also clearly very happy to be working with our good friends at MK2 and also with Eurospace.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by Arianna Bocco, SVP of acquisitions and productions for Sundance Selects/IFC Films, with Victoire Thevenin of MK2 acting on behalf of the filmmakers.

Sundance Selects/IFC Films has been a major presence at Cannes this year with Walter Salles’ On The Road and Cristian Mungiu’s Beyond The Hills in competition, Adam Leon’s Gimme The Loot in Un Certain Regard and Rodney Ascher’s Room 237 screening at Director’s Fortnight.

During the festival, Sundance Selects acquired Ken Loach’s competition film The Angels’ Share, IFC Films picked up Ben Wheatley’s Director’s Fortnight entry Sightseers and the IFC Midnight label took on Im Sang Soo’s competition film The Taste of Money.
