Pokemon: The First Movie jumped into the UK box office chart at number one with an opening three day gross of $3.5m (£2.2m). Playing at 481 sites, this gave the Japanese animation a considerable site average of $7,257 (£4,574) and the film wiped the floor with fellow opening animation The Tigger Movie despite being panned by critics.

Buena Vista International's AA Milne adaptation - also released in time for the start of the Easter school holidays following a platform opening in Scotland, grossed $912,236 (£574,999) from 411 sites. BVI also took a blow with the opening of the critically slammed Mission To Mars starring Tim Robbins and Gary Sinise. The weekend opening took $1.22m (£0.77m), almost half the gross for Erin Brockovich which dropped just 8% on its second weekend.

Weekend winners continued to be Amercian Beauty which rose 1% to remain in the Top 5 after 12 weeks and is on the cusp of taking £20m ($31.7m). Fellow Oscar winner Boy's Don't Cry just missed a place in the Top 15 but scooped the weekend's highest screen average for a 35mm film with $9,614 (£6,060) and rose 2% from last weekend on a limited nine screen release.
