Halloween

Released on August 31 in North America, the new Halloween is the ninth film in the series overall and the fourth since the franchise was acquired by the Weinstein Company's Dimension Films. Writer-director Rob Zombie (The Devil's Rejects) has described the film as part prequel to and part remake of the original Halloween, John Carpenter's landmark 1978 slasher picture. Wrestler-turned-actor Tyler Mane plays killer Michael Myers, with Scout Taylor-Compton (Charmed) in the role originally played by Jamie Lee Curtis, and Malcolm McDowell taking over the part first played by Donald Pleasence.

John Rambo

Sylvester Stallone directs and stars in this fourth instalment of the First Blood series, reprising one of his most recognisable 1980s roles. The screenplay by Art Monterastelli (Buried Alive) and Kevin Bernhardt (Peaceful Warrior) sends Rambo and a team of mercenaries to Burma to rescue a group of Christian Aid workers. The under-$50m film, produced and sold internationally by Nu Image/Millennium, is set to be released in North America by Lionsgate and The Weinstein Company in February or March 2008.

Point Break 2

Singapore-based RGM Entertainment is to produce this sequel to the 1991 surfing crime thriller that starred Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. Peter Iliff, writer of the original film, is completing a screenplay for the sequel and is set to direct. Production is scheduled for early to mid-2008 in South-east Asia on a budget of between $20m and $30m. The sequel will pick up the story of Swayze's character Bhodi and will also incorporate extreme sports action.

Terminator 4

New independent production and financing company Halcyon acquired franchise rights to the Terminator series last May and soon announced plans for a fourth film that would kick off a new Terminator trilogy. Though neither Arnold Schwarzenegger or original director James Cameron are expected to be involved, Halcyon's acquisition did include a script for Terminator 4 by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, writers of the third instalment. The new project is the subject of a legal dispute over distribution rights, but in court documents Halcyon has said it plans a project with a budget in excess of $185m that will be ready for theatrical release in the summer of 2009. The documents also say that the script contains "a surprising twist that must be kept absolutely secret until the film's release".
