Wemg's debut feature is set in Fujian, one of the first Chinese provinces to be opened to the outside world. The first part focuses on petty criminals who finance their modern lifestyle through blackmail; the second part follows a young man torn over whether to try his luck in the West.

Screening in the Time & Tide section is a low-budget project from Roodt, whose previous credits include Cry The Beloved Country, the Oscar-nominated Yesterday and Sarafina as well as such Hollywood titles as Father Hood). The film, about illegal migrants working in South Africa, received support from Rotterdam's Hubert Bals Fund.
