AlexanderPayne's About Schmidt and Spike Jonze's Adaptation each received four nominations includingbest picture today (Dec 17) from the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA),which announced its 10 Best Films of 2002 as well as a host of nominees inother categories.

In addition toits best picture nod About Schmidt yielded a best actor nomination for Jack Nicholson, bestsupporting actress for Kathy Bates and best writer for Alexander Payne and JimTaylor. Adaptationalso earned nominations for Chris Cooper and Meryl Streep as supporting actorand supporting actress and a writer nod for Charlie Kaufman.

In the actorcategory Nicholson goes up against Gangs Of New York's Daniel Day-Lewis - the pair werejointly awarded the best actor prize by the Los Angeles Film CriticsAssociation at the weekend - and Robin Williams for his role as a creepy photolab employee in One Hour Photo. Julianne Moore received another nod for Todd Haynes' Farfrom Heaven and will viefor top honours against Diane Lane for Unfaithful, Salma Hayek for Frida and Nicole Kidman for The Hours, in which Moore co-stars. The directorcategory boasts a line-up that would be hard to beat anywhere else: RomanPolanski, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are in the running for ThePianist, Gangs Of NewYork and Catch Me IfYou Can & MinorityReport respectively.

The best digitalactor category yielded nominations for Dobby in Harry Potter and the Chamber ofSecrets, Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Yoda in Star Wars:Episode II - Attack of the Clones. Elsewhere, Catherine Zeta-Jones garnered asupporting actress nomination for Chicago and Nia Vardalos was nominated in thewriter section for My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which also picked up an actingensemble nod.

Final ballotingwill take place online from Jan 6-13, 2003. The winners will be announced atthe 8th Annual Critics' Choice Awards gala on Jan 17 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.The BFCA says that of the major categories in the past two years, 78% ofCritics' Choice Awards nominees have gone to receive Oscar nominations.
