Paramount's comedy School Of Rock shook the charts at the weekend, openingnumber one on an estimated $20.2m.

The film, which stars Jack Black as a struggling guitarist whouses a stint as a substitute teacher to spread his love of heavy metal music,enjoyed sensational reviews and averaged $7,728 from 2,614 sites.

It was directed by Richard Linklater and also stars Joan Cusackand Mike White.

Opening in second on $17m and good reviews was MGM/UA's thriller OutOf Time. DenzelWashington plays a Florida Quays police chief who finds himself the suspect ina double homicide.

The film was directed by CarlFranklin - who directed Washington in 1995's Devil In A Blue Dress - and averaged $5,527 from 3,076 sites. Eva Mendesand Sanaa Lathan also star.

Universal's action film The Rundown slipped two places to third in itssecond week, adding $9.8m for $32.7m.

Buena Vista's Under The Tuscan Sun fell two to fourth as it raised itsrunning total by $7.9m to in its second week.

Focus Features' Lost In Translation climbed three to seventh, adding $4.3mfor $14.2m in its fourth week.

Overall box office for the top 12 films was $82.2m, down 19% onthe same period last year.

Next weekend is the Columbus Day Weekend and releases includeUniversal's black comedy Intolerable Cruelty directed by Joel Coen; Miramax's martialarts extravaganza Kill Bill Volume 1 from Quentin Tarantino; MGM/UA's family dog comedy GoodBoy! by John RobertHoffman; and Artisan's horror tale House Of The Dead directed by Uwe Boll.
