Delhi-based filmmakers Anusha Rizvi and Mahmood Farooqui are planning an adaptation of Aman Sethi’s non-fiction work A Free Man, which they are planning as a sequel to their 2010 hit Peepli Live.

The filmmaking duo have optioned film rights to the book, which chronicles the lives of daily wage workers in Delhi. “Peepli Live ends with the protagonist Natha landing in the city. A Free Man can be a continuation of his life there,” Rizvi and Farooqui told Screen. 

“You see migrant workers all around but know nothing of their background. This book offers a rare peek into their lives and their take on the world. We were inspired by its local humour and earthy dialogues.”

Rizvi and Farooqui have also optioned the tapes used as primary source material for the book.

A Free Man is one of three films under development by their production house Third World Productions, which they established in 2011. Opium, an adaptation of Amitav Ghosh’s Sea Of Poppies, is selected for the Co-production Market at Film Bazaar 2012. The third project is an original screenplay by Anusha Rizvi tentatively titled Three Into One.

Their debut film Peepli Live, a satire on farmer suicides in India which they co-directed, premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2010.
