The Simpsons Movie was the top film in Italy this weekend, openingwith $8.2m from 616 screens for a whopping $13,380 screen average.


Fox International's animated adventure knocked Shrek The Third off the number one spot this weekend after two weeks at the top.

Shrek, distributed by Universal Pictures International in Italy, fell by 48%
at the weekend, taking $2.2m from 554 screens. It has grossed $24.2m to date in the territory.


Three new entries catapulted into the Italian top five this weekend -The
Last Legion was at three with a $809,347 take, Warner Bros comedy No
Reservations
was at four with a $572,333 take and local thriller La Ragazza Del Lago entered at five after generating $516,564 over the three-day period.


Universal's Adam Sandler comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry fell by 28% in its second week, grossing $497,061 from 196 screens for a $1.5m total in the territory while Premonition, released by Eagle Pictures, fell by 33% and was unable to cross the $400,000 mark.

Italian drama Il Dolce E L'Amaro, distributed by Medusa Film, took $210,243 from 170 screens in its second weekend, falling by 42%. It has yet to cross the $1m mark.


Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There, which saw Cate Blanchett win Best Actress at this year's Venice Film Festival, dropped 40% to number nine while US romantic comedy In The Land Of Women fell 61% to number 10 in its fourth weekend.

Iranian-French co-production Scream Of The Ants and US horror Black
Christmas
both entered the top 20 this weekend while Michael Moore's
documentary Sicko and Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix both fell significantly but managed to stay in the chart.

The top 20 films in Italy generated a total of $14.2m over the period from September 14-16 and were collectively down 7% compared to the same week in 2006.
