There Will Be Blood, Paul Thomas Anderson's epic saga set against the backdrop of America's burgeoning oil industry, was the big winner at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) end of year voting yesterday, taking four prizes including best picture, best director and best actor for Daniel Day-Lewis.

The movie also won an award for Jack Fisk's production design and was runner-up in screenplay (Anderson), cinematography (Robert Elswit) and music (Jonny Greenwood) categories.

Christian Mungu's Palme d'Or winning Four Months, Three Weeks And Two Days was named best foreign language film and also won the supporting actor award for Vlad Ivanov.

Ironically Julian Schnabel's The Diving Bell And The Butterfly was runner-up in picture, foreign language film and director categories. Diving Bell did win in the cinematography category for Janusz Kaminski.

France's Marion Cotillard was voted best actress her playing Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose, beating Anamaria Marinca from Four Months into second place.

Meanwhile French animated film Persepolis directed by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Peyronnaud tied with Brad Bird's Rataouille for best animated feature.

Tamara Jenkins won the screenplay award for The Savages, while Amy Ryan was named best supporting actress for both Gone Baby Gone and Before The Devil Knows You're Dead; Cate Blanchett was runner-up for I'm Not There.

Charles Ferguson's No End In Sight was named best documentary of the year, with Michael Moore's Sicko coming in second.

Glen Hansard and Marketa Iglova won the best music award for Once.

Veteran actress Sarah Polley won the new generation award for her directorial debut Away From Her, and a special citation was made to the New Crowned Hope programme. Legacy awards were given to the Outfest Legacy Project and Milestone Films.

As previously announced Sidney Lumet will be presented with the lifetime achievement award at the LAFCA ceremony which will take place in Century City on Jan 12.
