Tuesday's Victims' Benefit Day at the Movies - on which theatre owners and distributors donated all ticket and concessions sales to Sept 11 charities - raised over $5m for disaster relief.
50 percent of the proceeds collected will be donated to the American Red Cross and 50 percent will be donated to the United Way. 100% of Sept 25 ticket and concessions sales are to be donated.
Over 450 exhibitors across the US representing over 30,000 screens participated in the benefit. Distributors also agreed to waive the film rental due to them for the day. They were: Buena Vista and Miramax Films, DreamWorks, MGM, New Line, Paramount, Sony Pictures and Sony Pictures Classics, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros.
