Wellspring, which wasrecently acquired by entertainment company Genius Products, has picked up allUS rights from StudioCanal to Patrice Chereau's Gabrielle.

The company bought the filmat The New York Film Festival earlier this year and plans a spring 2006.

Based on Joseph Conrad'sshort story The Return, theturn-of-the-century story takes place in France and tracks the maritalbreakdown of a middle-aged bourgeois couple. Isabelle Huppert and PascalGreggory star.

"Gabrielle is emotionally complex, intellectually stimulating,and visually splendid - in short it embodies everything Americanaudiences have come to love about French cinema," senior vice president ofacquisitions and distribution Marie Therese Guirgis said.

Guirgis negotiated the dealwith StudioCanal's John Kochman.

Wellspring's slate includesHou Hsiao-hsien's Cafe Lumiere,Werner Herzog's documentaries Wheel Of Time and The White Diamond, and Dan Mirvish's musical comedy Open House.
