In addition to being selected as Japan's nomination for best foreign-language Oscar, Isao Yukisada's Go has now been awarded a record seven prizes from a critics' panel for Kinema Jumpo, Japan's oldest film magazine.

The Kinema Junpo awards, considered Japan's most prestigious, went to Go for Best Film, to Yukisada for Best Director and to star Yosuke Kubozuka for Best Actor and Best Newcomer. The film, about a Korean teenager's struggle to find identity and love in Japanese society, was released by Toei last October to popular and critical acclaim, grossing more than $1m in just four weeks in 13 screens.

Winner of the Best Actress prize was Reiko Kataoka, the star of Ryosuke Hashiguchi's Hush!. The Best Foreign Film was Traffic.

The top five Japanese films, as selected by the Kinema Junpo critics were (1) Go, (2) Hush!, (3) Spirited Away, (4) Eureka and (5) Kazahana.
