Anne Hathaway, nominated for a lead actress Oscar last season for Rachel Getting Married, is attached to star for The Weinstein Company as Judy Garland in film and stage versions of Gerald Clarke’s biography Get Happy: The Life Of Judy Garland.

Get Happy is based on hundreds of interviews and Garland’s own
unfinished and unpublished autobiography and portrays the dramatic
highs and lows of the cultural icon’s life from her tumultuous early
years as a child performer to her tragic last days.

Harvey Weinstein, who worked with Hathaway on Ella Enchanted and
Hoodwinked! and has optioned film and stage rights to Clarke’s book,
said Hathaway would be a ‘true class act’ in the role. The book was
published in March 2001.

Renee Witt brought the project to The Weinstein Company and Kelly
Carmichael and Ben Famiglietti will oversee production for the
company.

Jeff Daitch negotiated the deal on behalf of the Weinsteins and the
company optioned the rights from Anna Cottle and Mary Alice Kier at
Cine/Lit Representation. Cottle and Kier represented Clarke in
negotiations on behalf of the Helen Brann Agency.
