Three films that could not be more different from each other, Roadshow's star performer The Matrix Revolutions on 453 screens, Columbia TriStar's In The Cut on 56 screens, and Hopscotch's Spellbound on just 13 screens, were the stand-outs in terms of their screen average on the weekend. Each notched up more than A$6,000 per screen.

But the 66% drop off in patronage experienced by The Matrix Revolutions was also rather sobering after the sensational business it did on the previous weekend when it opened. The first burst of very hot weather would have contributed.

It was a big week for new faces. Besides In The Cut and Spellbound, BVI's Seabiscuit opened and attained second spot with a gross of A$750,000 from 231 screens. On previews UIP's School Of Rock came in fourth after Intolerable Cruelty, and Roadshow's Elf and Mystic River were ninth and eighteenth respectively.
