Australia has become the latest territory to be conquered by indie-sensation My Big Fat Greek Wedding, according to co-producer Gold Circle Films.

The romantic comedy, directed by Joel Zwick and distributed in Australia by Roadshow, launched straight into number one at the Australian box office over the weekend, grossing $1.9m (A$3.4m) from 166 screens for a mighty per-screen average of $11,174. Including previews, the film has taken $3.1m in the territory.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is also holding strong in the UK where it held fourth place at the weekend, dropping off just 9% from the previous weekend and bringing its total gross after six weeks on release to $17.2m. It is distributed by Entertainment in the UK.

In North America the $5m film has grossed a staggering $177.7m and still retains a top five position, now in its 28th week of release for IFC Films.
