A stunning $123.4m from New Line’s Stephen King reboot through Warner Bros banished the summer blues as it obliterated the September record for a North American release.

It opened in 4,103 theatres for a $30,076 per-site average as $123.4m smashed the previous best mark of $48.5m set by Hotel Transylvania 2 in 2015.

The R-rated horror also scored the third largest debut of year-to-date behind Beauty And The Beast and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2. Argentina’s Andy Muschietti (Mama) directed and Bill Skarsgard stars as Pennywise the Clown, who goes on the rampage in a town in Maine.

Meanwhile Reese Witherspoon rom-com Home Again arrived in second place on a feeble $8.6m in 2,940 sites through Open Road.

It helped the top 12 amass for $154.8m, up 191.9% on last weekend and a gain of 45.4% on the comparable session in 2016.

This week’s wide releases are: Lionsgate/CBS Films’ thriller American Assassin starring Taylor Kitsch and Michael Keaton; recent Venice and Toronto premiere and horror film mother! from Darren Aronofsky starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem; and the thriller All I See Is You with Blake Lively and Jason Clarke via Open Road.
