The studio passed the mark in its second fastest time on Jul 11 and has reached $1bn 11 times in a row.

Powering the accomplishment were Sony Pictures Entertainment’s six number one launches for this year-do-date – The Amazing Spider-Man on $242.1m after four weekends in release, The Vow, 21 Jump Street, Think Like A Man, Underworld 4 and MIB 3.

Still to come for 2012 are the James Bond adventure Skyfall, next weekend’s release Total Recall, Zero Dark Thirty from Kathryn Bigelow, Hope Springs, Sparkle, Premium Rush, Toronto opener Looper, and the animated film Hotel Transylvania, among others.

Sony crossed $1bn in 2011 in a company record 209 days.
