‘The Lion King’

JULY 22 UPDATE: Disney’s The Lion King earned a confirmed $467m worldwide over the weekend as the animation vaulted to $543.6m after 10 days, fuelled by a $275.2m international weekend and a $191.8m record July debut in North America that will encourage box office observers after sluggish overall performance in the year-to-date.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Far From Home is fast approaching the $1bn global milestone, while Warner Bros horror Annabelle Comes Home is approaching $200m worldwide.


UPDATED: Jon Favreau’s photo-real adventure adaptation The Lion King stands at $351.8m at international box office and $97.5m in China after 10 days, and opened top in the UK on $20.9m for the second highest launch of the year behind Avengers: Endgame.

The international weekend haul ranks as the eighth biggest of all time and opened top in all international markets, earning the distinction of all-time top five debuts in Russia on $17m, Brazil on $18.3m, Mexico on $18.4m, Australia on $17.2m, and the entire Latin America region on $57m. Other debuts generated $19.3m in France, $17.5m in South Korea, $12.6m in Germany, $9.4m in India, $8.6m in Spain, and $6.5m in Netherlands. The Lion King is yet to debut in Japan, Italy, and Hong Kong.

The tentpole grossed an estimated $25.2m on IMAX worldwide – a record global debut for a Disney-branded film – and $14.1m from international markets including $2.6m in China.

Toy Story 4 became the seventh Pixar release to cross $800m worldwide after $42m boosted the tally to $861.2m in the fifth session, and earned $26.4m for $484.7m internationally. After nine weekends, Aladdin has climbed to $989.1m worldwide, and $648.8m internationally. Avengers: Endgame has reached $2.7906bn globally and overtook Avatar’s nine-year record of $2.7897bn after a re-release in North America to rank as the highest grossing worldwide release of all time, unadjusted for inflation. It stands at $1.936bn internationally.


UPDATED: Spider-Man: Far From Home brought in a further $37.8m from 67 markets as it leapt to a $652.2m international running total, and added $59m for $972m globally. China remains the lead market on $201.2m, then South Korea on $55.3m, the UK on $34.2m, Mexico on $28.7m, and Japan on $24.8m.


UPDATED: Annabelle Comes Home delivered a $7.2m session from 78 markets as the tally climbed to $129.5m, and worldwide to $196.1m. The latest entry from the Conjuring horror brand has amassed $16m in Mexico, $8.9m in Indonesia, $6.6m in Brazil, $5.5m in Russia, and $5m in the UK following a $967,000 second weekend.


UPDATED: Yesterday added $9.3m globally for $98.1m, and used a $4.2m international session to climb to $40.5m. There were no new debuts for Danny Boyle’s musical romance as the UK delivered the top holdover on $969,000 for $12.3m after four weekends. Australia has generated $7.8m after four, and France and Spain $3.1m apiece, both after three.

Illumination Entertainment’s The Secret Life Of Pets 2 added $8.2m worldwide and $6.7m internationally to stand at $318.6m and $167m, respectively, with Germany the top holdover market on $1.3m for $13.1m after four sessions. China has generated $20.9m after three.


Alligator horror Crawl brought in $2.7m from 21 markets representing 26% of the international footprint as the early running total slithered to $9.9m. Highlights from the second session include $713,000 for $2.3m in Malaysia, $437,000 for $1.6m in Indonesia, and $262,000 for $1.1m in UAE. Taiwan has generated $746,000 after two, and Australia $745,000. Crawl opens in France this week, Mexico on August 9, Russia and Germany on August 22, the UK and Spain on August 23, and Brazil on September 26. Rocketman starring Taron Egerton as Elton John stands at $88.6m internationally, and opens in its final market of Japan on August 23.


John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum stands at $318.2m globally after 10 weekends in release. The international running total of $149.4m is powered by $13.5m in the UK, $11m in Australia, $7.5m in Russia, and $7.4m in Mexico, all after 10, and $11.9m in Germany after nine sessions.
