Brad Bird has been selected to receive the Writers Guild of America West's tenth annual Animation Writing Award for lifetime achievement.

Bird, who won animated picture Oscars for Ratatouille and The Incredibles and previously directed The Iron Giant, will collect the honour at the WGA West's 2008 Honorary Awards Luncheon on April 23.

The film-maker is a lifelong animation devotee and began working with legendary Disney animator Kahl at the age of 14 before becoming an animator at Disney and other studios. He is currently preparing the live-action feature 1906, about the catastrophic San Francisco earthquake.
