Buena Vista International (BVI) opened Treasure Planet in an exclusive presentation in France, grossing a worthy $280,000. The animated feature is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel Treasure Island and is scheduled to open in the US on Nov 29. Signs took $3.6m over the weekend for a $166m international cumulative score. Opening at number one in South Africa, the supernatural thriller grossed $160,000 from 73 screens. This was bigger than the territory opening for director M Night Shyamalan's previous picture Unbreakable but a little less than The Sixth Sense.
Still in early days, Sweet Home Alabama took $1m over the weekend for a $2m running total. The comedy romance opened number one in Thailand, where it grossed $190,000 from 62 screens. This was roughly double the amount made by star Reese Witherspoon's previous picture, Legally Blonde.
The fantasy action picture Reign Of Fire grossed $900,000 and raised its cumulative score to $27.5m. In its second week in Spain it took $650,000, dropping 46% for a $2.2m cumulative total. Lilo & Stitch grossed $900,000 to raise its running total to $97m.
