Fernando Meirelles' Cannes competitor Blindness will open the 28th Atlantic Film Festival in Halifax on September 11.

Based on the novel by Jose Saramago and starring Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover, Gael Garcia Bernal and Alice Braga, the Canada-Brazil-Japan coproduction was adapted for the screen by Don McKellar, who is also featured in the film. The film is distributed in Canada by Alliance Films.

Brazil is one of three featured nations at the festival's allied producer's market, Strategic Partners (September 12-14), alongside Argentina and Mexico.

'We are delighted to kick off our 28th Festival with Blindness,' said Atlantic Festival director Lia Rinaldo in a statement. 'Opening night will beautifully align our celebration of Canadian cinema with this incredible Brazilian co-production.'

The Atlantic Film Festival runs from September 11-20.
