Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper star.

Cannes organisers have revealed that Gus Van Sant’s Restless will be the opening film of Un Certain Regard, on Thursday, May 12.

Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper star as two off-beat teenagers who have to confront death.

The film is produced by Columbia Pictures, Imagine Entertainment and 360 Pictures.

Jason Lew wrote the screenplay and Bryce Dallas Howard produced alongside her father Ron Howard and his Imagine partner Brian Grazer.

Sony Pictures Classics plans a likely autumn launch in the US; SPRI will distribute around the world.

Van Sant won the Palme d’or in 2003 for Elephant and the 60th anniversary award for Paranoid Park in 2007. He first screened in Cannes competition with 1995’s To Die For.

Emir Kusturica heads the Un Certain Regard jury and will present that award on May 21.

Un Certain Regard is expected to have a programme of about 20 titles. The Cannes programme will be announced mid-day tomorrow (April 14).
