The documentary picked the best director prize at Sundance earlier this year.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to Leon Gast’s documentary Smash His Camera following a deal with Submarine Entertainment.

Gast won the best director prize at the Sundance Film Festival for the film about the infamous paparazzo Ron Galella, famous for his restraining order from Jackie Onassis and for losing five teeth at the hands of Marlon Brando.

Adam Schlesinger and Linda Saffire produced the film, recently acquired by HBO for US broadcast rights.

“Leon Gast has made the kind of documentary that we’re always thrilled to see—thoughtful and artfully crafted and at the same time incredibly entertaining,” Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles said. “Galella is a character for the ages.”

Magnolia Pictures senior vice president Tom Quinn brokered the deal with Josh Braun and Jason Janego from Submarine.
