Italian director Marco Bellocchio will give the Cinema Masterclass at Cannes this year.

He said: “I think that the most precious thing a director can teach anyone wanting to work in the business is how to work with actors and actresses. Anyone can teach technique, but the ability to get another person to interpret a character you have imagined is a gift, although it can be learned in part by a director who isn’t afraid of risking failure. You can never be certain of a good result in human relationships.”

He will talk with Michel Ciment about his work, on stage at the Salle Bunuel on May 19 at 17:00. Past masters giving the class include Martin Scorsese, Stephen Freares, Nanni Moretti and Wong Kar-Wai.

Bellocchio has had 10 films in Cannes selection, from Leap into the Void in 1980 to last year’s Vincere.
