The other new openers did not fare so well. Relativity’s District B13 remake Brick Mansions starring the late Paul Walker arrived in fifth place on $9.6m, while horror The Quiet Ones opened through Lionsgate on $4m.

TriStar’s faith-based hit Heaven Is For Real slipped one place to number three and added $13.8m in its second weekend to reach $51.9m.

A24 released Venice 2013 premiere Locke, the suspenseful drama starring a car-bound Tom Hardy. The highly regarded film grossed $89,200 from four sites for a robust $22,300 average. IM Global handles international sales.

Samuel Goldwyn Films opened the former Argentinian foreign language Oscar submission The German Doctor and the thriller took $35,000 from five venues.

RADiUS debuted the acclaimed thriller Blue Ruin on $31,800 from seven.

Summer is coming early this year. This week’s wide release is Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx and Sally Field.
