Contender Films has acquired UK rights to Nick Broomfield's Iraq drama Battle For Haditha from HanWay Films.

The deal comes after another UK distributor, Metrodome, handed back the UK rights to HanWay in late December.

The drama is a feature film based on real events that occurred in November 2005 in Haditha, Iraq in a clash between US soldiers and Iraqi civilians. The film stars ex-Marines and was shot on location in Jordan.

Contender will release Battle For Haditha in select UK cinemas from Feb 1. Channel 4 (which backed the project) has TV rights and a DVD launch is planned for March 17.

The film played in Toronto and London festivals and won Broomfield the best director prize in San Sebastian.

Richard Bridgwood, MD at Contender Entertainment, said: 'Battle For Haditha is a powerful and important film, driven by emotive story and unforgettable performances, which we are delighted to be able to bring to a theatrical audience as part of a very exciting slate of films from Contender in 2008.
