Entering the final stretch of an international campaign that beganin July, the action sequel Bad Boys 2 opened top in its final market of Japan at the weekend onan estimated $3.5m.

Executives at ColumbiaTriStar Film Distributors International (CTFDI) expect the film to prosper inJapan going into the holiday season and in particular have high hopes for thelucrative first two weeks of the new year.

Overall Bad Boys 2 grossed just under $4m from 900 international screens at theweekend to raise its running total to $123.6m. Executives hope to match thefilm's $138m domestic tally.

The police action thriller S.W.A.T. opened top in Australia on just under$2m, accounting for half the $4m weekend gross from 1,250 screens.

A number one opening in Brazil on $600,000 helped to raise thefilm's international score to $38m. Final figures for the Italian opening werenot available at time of writing.

S.W.A.T.gets its first major wave of Western European bows next week, when openings includethe UK, Germany, France and Spain.
