The Dark Knight has become the fastest release in history to cross $200m after it reached the milestone in five days, smashing the previous mark of eight days set by Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in 2006.

The comic book sequel stands at $203.8m and would have overtaken Batman Begins' $205.3m cumulative total today [July 23] as it heads towards a second weekend. Wednesday's grosses were not available at time of writing.

Warner Bros distribution chief Dan Fellman and his team will now look to beat the record for the quickest film to reach $300m, which Dead Man's Chest achieved in 16 days.

The Dark Knight is expected to finish comfortably in the $400m range and possibly higher, however Fellman would not be drawn on making a prediction.
