Disney and Spyglass Entertainment's family comedy The Pacifier opened top over the weekend on anestimated $30.2m, beating MGM's caper sequel Be Cool into second place on $23.5m and defyingpredictions of a reverse-order finish.

The only other new release that made it into the top 10 was WarnerIndependent Pictures' psychodrama The Jacket, which opened in 10th place on $2.7m.

Sony's domestic blockbuster Hitch - the number one international title ofthe weekend - fell one place to third on $12.5m for an excellent $138.4mrunning total in its fourth weekend, while last weekend's champion Diary OfA Mad Black Woman slippedto fourth on $12m bringing its total gross to $38.1m to date for Lions Gate.

Warner Bros' Million Dollar Baby added $8.5m for $76.9m one week after itstriumph at the Oscars, while The Aviator, which claimed five Academy Awards, slipped one place to11th on $2.3m for $97.1m. Both pictures were in their 12th weekends.

Adam Shankman's The Pacifier stars Diesel in comedy mode as a Navy Seal assigned toprotect the family of a government scientist. The picture averaged $9,652 on3,131 screens despite drew bad reviews.

In Be Cool,John Travolta reprises his Get Shorty role as Chili Palmer, the thug turned film producer whotries his hand at being a music manager. Uma Thurman and Harvey Keitel alsostar in F Gary Gray's picture, which averaged $7,307 on 3,216 screens. It toodrew below average reviews.

Adrien Brody plays an incarcerated war veteran wrongly accused ofmurder who travels in time and sees his own death in The Jacket, which also stars Keira Knightley andJennifer Jason Leigh. John Maybury's picture averaged $2,028 on 1,331 screens.

Next weekend's wide releases are Miramax's Hostage starring Bruce Willis; and 20th CenturyFox's animated family title Robots, starring the vocal talents of Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry and MelBrooks.
