D Films has acquired all Canadian rights to the comedy Roller Town featuring the film debut of the Canadian comedy troupe Picnicface.

Bill Niven and Jay Dahl are producing and Picnicface director Andrew Bush is directing the story of three friends in the 1980s who try to thwart a local crime syndicate from taking over their local rollerskating rink.

Production on the Bad Astronaut production is set to begin in Halifax this summer. The deal was negotiated for D Films by Tony Cianciotta and for Bad Astronaut by president Bill Niven.

“The D Films team really get Picnicface’s brand of comedy and the market for it,” Niven said. “This is a great match.”

D Films recently signed an exclusive, multi-film DVD distribution deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Canada.
