Drafthouse Films and Films We Like have jointly acquired North American rights to Ari Folman’s follow-up to Waltz With Bashir.
The Congress premiered in Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes last month and blends live-action and psychedelic animation to tell the story of an aging, out-of-work actress whose digital image becomes a star of future Hollywood.
Robin Wright stars alongside Jon Hamm, Paul Giamatti and Harvey Keitel. The film is based on Stanislaw Lem’s 1971 novel The Futurological Congress.
Drafthouse Films plans a 2014 theatrical and VoD release and Films We Like will handle Canadian distribution. US viewers who enroll in the Drafthouse Alliance subscription programme are guaranteed pre-order.
Tim League and James Emanuel Shapiro on behalf of Drafthouse Films negotiated the deal with Brigitte Suárez and Michael Weber of The Match Factory.
