First Run Features has acquired US theatrical, DVD and select ancillary rights from The Film Sales Company to Garbo: The Spy.

Edmon Roch’s documentary won the Goya for best documentary and screenplay and chronicles the work of Juan Pujol, a second world war double agent who single-handedly convinced the Nazis that the D-Daylandings were a decoy.

The film premiered at IDFA in Amsterdam and screened in Pujol’s native Spain for more than 21 consecutive weeks. First Run plans an autumn release.

“This is one of those fabulous stories that proves truth is stranger than fiction,” First Run’s Seymour Wishman said. “The movie is not only fascinating, it is beautifully crafted and full of suspense”.

Film Sales Company expects to announce a number of international deals in the coming days. Andrew Herwitz brokered the deal with Marc Mauceri on behalf of the distributor and said there was significant remake interest in the project.
