The fledgling distributor issued a timely announcement out of CinemaCon in Las Vegas as it prepares to release its first film Insidious on Friday.

The Rum Diary will open on Oct 28 and had been available for some time. That it should wind up at FilmDistrict comes as little surprise given that producer Graham King and business partner Tim Headington’s GK Films launched FilmDistrict in association with Peter Schlessel.

The film stars Johnny Depp as a jaded reporter who flees New York to find himself in Puerto Rico. Bruce Robinson directed from his adaptation of the early Hunter S Thompson novel published in 1998. Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli, Richard Jenkins and Giovanni Ribisi round out the cast.

Depp and Christi Dembrowski’s Infinitum Nihil produced with Graham King and Tim Headington, Anthony Rhulen and Robert Kravis.

FilmDistrict’s maiden slate includes Soul Surfer due on Apr 8, Drive due on Sept 16 and Lockout set for Feb 24, 2012.
