The film-makers on The Tillman Story have lost their appeal to the MPAA against the R rating one week before the film is due to open in North America.

The classification and rating appeals board upheld the rating after assigning it for “language.”

Distributor The Weinstein Company lodged the appeal with director Amir Bar-Lev and producer John Battsek.

The film-makers made representations to the board and argued that the film’s language should not prevent the documentary’s story and message from reaching a wider audience.

The Tillman Storyfollows one family’s efforts to uncover the truth surrounding their son’s death in Afghanistan.
