Rio’s estimated $26.8m East weekend haul enabled Fox’s family film to stay top for the second weekend in a row despite a stiff challenge from Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family on $25.8m.

Fox’s period romance Water For Elephants starring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson launched in third on $17.5m while Universal’s family film Hop in fourth place crossed $100m in its fourth weekend.

In the limited arena SPC launched Morgan Spurlock’sPOM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold on $135,000 from 18 theatres while the same distributor opened Incendies on $54,600 from three.

Next weekend’s wide releases are: Universal’s Fast Five starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and The Rock; OmniLab’s Dylan Dog: Dead Of Night with Brandon Routh through Freestyle Releasing; Prom from Buena Vista; and Hoodwinked Too! Hood Vs Evil from TWC.
