Celebrating its first anniversary, online film destination SnagFilms has launched the SnagFilms SummerFest to showcase previously unreleased documentaries.

The event kicks off on July 24 with the US premiere of Jonathan Bricklin’s The Entrepreneur in which the film-maker chronicles his father’s attempt to build a new American car company.

Morgan Spurlock served as executive producer and is presenting the film. Further announcements on SnagFilms SummerFest releases will follow throughout the summer.

The company has also added documentaries from the Sundance Channel to its roster and has established a distribution partnership with Comcast Interactive Media’s online entertainment destination Fancast.

“Since its launch [on July 17, 2008], SnagFilms has been able to liberate documentaries from screening only at festivals or in the traditional 200-seat theatrical venues, in limited release in just New York or Los Angeles, and bring these important films to potentially millions of viewers nationwide,” SnagFilms CEO Rick Allen said.

SnagFilms founder Ted Leonsis added that in the year since it launched, the company had “exceeded our expectations in every way”, with more than 840 non-fiction films available for free viewing online, an online distribution network of more than 25,000 affiliates, and more than one billion page views for SnagFilms film widgets.
