Syfy Ventures and Universal Pictures have created the genre label Syfy Films.

The venture will develop and produce Syfy-branded sci-fi, fantasy, supernatural and horror features that Universal will distribute.

Mark Stern, executive vice-president of original programming at Syfy and co-head of content for Universal Cable Productions, will jointly oversee the operation with Universal co-chairman Donna Langley.

Universal and Syfy are searching for a production executive to run Syfy Films on the Universal lot.

The label will distribute one to two films a year through Universal beginning in 2012.

Universal will also be responsible for marketing and publicity. Syfy will promote each film across its television, online and mobile platforms.
