Faulks’ first love was music, as a singer/songwriter touring and releasing music under the moniker Tenterhook. But the life of an impoverished artist was not for him. When shopping around his own television idea, Faulks encountered small UK production outfit Burn These Words and began working for them as an assistant in 2020.
There, he cut his teeth working from early script right through to the edit on feature Reality, starring Sydney Sweeney. “I realised film was where it’s at,” says Faulks, who rose to junior producer in his four years at the company. “I was drawn to the wild west of it all.”
While working on Burn These Words’ slate, he struck up a rapport with Embankment co-founder Hugo Grumbar. After seven months of coffees and tennis matches, Grumbar offered him a job in acquisitions, and Faulks wasted no time in re-energising Embankment’s slate with fresh voices. Rob Savage’s Manhattan horror Molepeople, starring Anthony Ramos and Ben Mendelsohn, was among the first titles he brought in, with a Good Chaos project — the first for Embankment — and Jed Hart’s sophomore feature also incoming.
Relentless tenacity remains central to his approach. “I spend my whole life running around Soho, shaking hands with people, going on Zoom calls at 8am with an Australian producer and 9pm with a Los Angeles producer,” he says. “In acquisitions, you have to be like a rash on people. You never know when a project will suddenly attach that cast and you might miss that great thing.”
