Augusta Charlton

Director, international sales and acquisitions, Mister Smith Entertainment

  • A masters degree in English literature at the University of Edinburgh
  • Joined Mister Smith Entertainment in 2023

Charlton began her screen career at CrossDay Productions after getting her English literature masters degree, then freelanced in post-production and production co-ordinating on series including Good Omens. On the hunt for “a job with a pension” and thanks to some sage advice from then-Independent executive Nada Cirjanic, she segued to Great Point Media in 2019, initially as sales executive.

At Great Point, Charlton became obsessed with the investments side of the business and worked as a commercial associate on Blue Jean, Pretty Red Dress and Scrapper, and as an executive producer on Kneecap.

After joining Mister Smith, an agency that has historically focused on international titles, Charlton — commonly known by her childhood nickname Goose — has used her strong UK network to help the company reconnect with the local landscape on a slate that includes UK-Ireland co-pro Everybody Digs Bill Evans and UK Christmas film Tinsel Town, starring Kiefer Sutherland and Rebel Wilson.

Charlton also leads sales across most of Asia, with Australian shark thriller Dangerous Animals, in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, proving a hit. “Having a title that Asian buyers want has been so exciting, and I’ve learnt so much.”

One key takeaway for Charlton has been to always be forward-looking. “There are no two-trick ponies. You can’t rely on the same strategy that has been successful in the past — you must reinvent.”
