Acquisitions manager and sales agent, Charades

  • Graduated with a bachelors degree in European, social and political studies at UCL and Sciences Po
  • Has a masters degree in corporate and public management at Sciences Po and HEC Paris

Desquiens landed at Charades as an intern in 2019 after wide-ranging work experience that included stints at the French Senate, French financial paper Les Échos and a US think tank in Tokyo. She says she was drawn “by the strategic and curatorial aspect of acquisitions”.

Desquiens officially joined the company in early 2021 and is now acquisitions manager while also handling sales on Asian territories. The dual roles allow her to “develop long-term relationships with both producers and distributors”.

While acknowledging that acquisitions at Charades is a collective process, she has worked on several high-profile titles including Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun, Rich Peppiatt’s Kneecap and Maura Delpero’s Vermiglio, a project Charades boarded early for sales and as co-producer. Recent acquisitions include Clio Barnard’s I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning on which she has an executive producer credit.

“It’s a very exciting time to be working at Charades,” says Desquiens, noting the company is “striving to strike that peculiar balance of going for more established directors while finding new voices we’re excited about”.

After a few years on the job, Desquiens says: “I have learned to trust my gut instinct when it comes to a project, beyond the formulaic approach we can sometimes adopt. Reading a script or watching a cut that is truly moving is rare enough that it is a sign to go for it, even if, on paper, it will be a tough sell. That, I think, is one of Charades’ guiding principles.”
