Acquisitions and sales manager, Plaion Pictures
- Worked at Wild Bunch Germany as an intern in 2020
- Joined Plaion Pictures initially as a trainee the same year
Eckhardt got a taste for the film industry early, working as a production intern at Munich-based Odeon Film (now called Odeon Fiction, part of Leonine Studios) for a year in 2014-15 before going to university, initially at the University of Konstanz where she took British and American studies followed by a masters in film studies at the University of Kent in the UK.
For the past five years, she has worked at leading German independent distributor Plaion Pictures, rising through the sales and acquisition ranks to her current role. She has recently been involved in the acquisition of highly anticipated titles including Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, Bi Gan’s Resurrection and Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice. She also played a key role in the company’s acquisition of 2023 Palme d’Or winner Anatomy Of A Fall.
Eckhardt notes that her five years in the industry have coincided with a series of challenges such as the pandemic, strikes and the tariff war. “It’s an ever-changing industry so it’s important to be adaptable and to bring fresh points of view,” she says. Eckhardt cites Plaion’s director of acquisitions Moritz Peters as an important mentor: “He is a great teacher and can keep a cool head in stressful situations.”
The film industry is a people business, notes Eckhardt, and credibility is important. “It is natural to worry that you might misjudge a project early in your career,” she observes. “But you should be authentic, trust your instincts and have the courage to openly share your opinions.”
