Vice president, acquisitions and co-productions, Bleecker Street
- Graduated in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in English language and literature from the University of California, Berkeley
- Joined Bleecker Street in 2019
After four years at ICM Partners in various roles including agent trainee and talent co-ordinator, King joined Bleecker Street in 2019 and rose up from co-ordinator to lead film acquisitions, shepherding projects through post-production while striving to amplify a broad tapestry of voices.
The eternal quest for theatrical magic has seen Bleecker acquire films earlier and broaden the firm’s taste from the traditional sweetspot of highbrow dramas. Survival horror Out Of Darkness opened last year, and production has wrapped on ‘hardcore genre’ title The Third Parent with Rob Lowe and Crispin Glover. “That space continues to work theatrically,” notes King.
The executive led the acquisition of The Wedding Banquet, which premiered at Sundance and was pre-bought in April 2024. Last year she bought Guy Nattiv’s Harmonia in the Cannes market, Max Walker-Silverman’s Rebuilding and The Friend with Naomi Watts out of Toronto.
King is inspired by Bleecker Street president Kent Sanderson’s “encyclopaedic knowledge of film and the industry”, founder and CEO Andrew Karpen’s “perseverance”, and ICM’s Adam Schweitzer, who taught her that “you can be a good and kind person and still succeed”.
King wants to see more creative marketing campaigns to help a film pop. “I have a lot to learn, but I would love to dip my toes into development,” she adds.
