Gary Rubin's First Independent Pictures has acquired US rights to Killer Films and Epoch Films' offbeat comedy Gigantic.

Matt Aselton directed the film starring Paul Dano and Zooey Deschanel as a mattress shop worker and his foul-mouthed girlfriend who try to adopt a baby. John Goodman, Ed Asner and Jane Alexander round out the key cast.

Killer Films' Christine Vachon and Mindy Goldberg produced and Scott Ferguson, Jeff Preiss, Jerry Soloman and John Wells served as executive producers. First Independent plans a spring release on Gigantic, which premiered at Toronto.

'This is a special and different film,' Rubin said. 'We agreed we hadn't seen anything like it in a long time. The cast is fantastic, it's an impressive debut for Matt, and we are pleased to be working both Mindy and Christine, whose work we have admired.'

'We couldn't be happier to be working with First Independent,' Goldberg added. 'They are passionate about the film, and Epoch Films and Killer Films look forward to starting a successful relationship with them.'

Rubin and attorney Shelley Surpin of Surpin And Mayersohn brokered the deal with Cinetic Media's Sarah Lash and attorney Jerry Dasti.

Fortissimo Films holds international rights.
