Fortissimo Film Sales has acquired world rights to Jim Jarmusch's Coffee & Cigarettes.
Written and directed by Jarmusch, Coffee & Cigarettes will screen in Official Selection out-of-competition in Venice and as a Special Presentation in Toronto next month.
Sales have already been completed for France (BAC Films), Italy (BIM) and Japan (Asmik Ace), with Fortissimo handling all remaining world territories.
Coffee & Cigarettes features characters who are, in Jarmusch's words, "sitting around, drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes and discussing subjects as diverse as caffeine popsicles, Abbott & Costello, Elvis conspiracy theories, the proper preparation of English tea, the inventions of Nikola Tesla, the fictitious rock band SQURL, Paris in the twenties, and the use of nicotine as an insecticide'"
The diverse cast includes Roberto Benigni, Steve Buscemi, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Cate Blanchett, Alfred Molina, Steve Coogan and Bill Murray.
"Jim Jarmusch's unique cinematic style makes him one of the world's most influential independent filmmakers, and we're honoured to be representing his latest work," commented Fortissimo co-head Wouter Barendrecht.
"Fortissimo is a world-class organisation with an exciting sense of independent cinema and the international marketplace," stated ICM's Bart Walker, who completed the deal on behalf of Jarmusch and is handling North American sales.
