Twentieth Century Fox will release M Night Shyamalan's paranoia thriller The Happening on Friday 13th in June 2008.

Mark Wahlberg is set to star in the story of a family on the run from an apocalyptic threat to humanity. Shyamalan is preparing an August shoot in Philadelphia based on his original screenplay, and is producing with Sam Mercer and Barry Mendel.

The studio is co-financing with Mumbai-based UTV and holds worldwide rights excluding India, which will be handled by UTV.

'Friday the 13th has very distinctive, global connotations, which make it the ideal launching pad for this frightening thriller,' 20th Century Fox domestic distribution president Bruce Snyder said.

'Mark has a unique blend of charisma, humanity, authenticity and skillfulness as an actor, all of which coalesced at this moment in his career, making him the perfect person to take on the role of Elliot Moore, the science teacher at the centre of this event,' Shyamalan said.
