Gangs Of New York opened in five international markets over theweekend, including a strong three-day $4.2m bow on 385 screens in the UKthrough Entertainment Film Distributors (£2.6m in local currency), rankingsecond nationwide and first in London's West End and in Ireland. MartinScorsese's three-hour epic opened at number one in France through SND, grossing$4.6m (Euros 4.3m) from 843 screens from a five-day launch.

In Belgium, whereit was released through Kinepolis Film Distribution/RCV, the picture's five-daylaunch yielded $569,215 (Euros 539,435) from 76 screens for a number oneplace. In the French-speaking part of Switzerland its four-day openinggrossed $195,000 (SFr277,940) from 14 screens. It was released in the territorythrough Elite. Finally, opening in Israel through Shipora, Gangs took $76,787 (local currency 371,955) from afour-day bow on 25 screens.

The picture continued to do good business in Japan, where itopened on Dec 21, and now has a territory cumulative gross of $17.5m. In Singapore,where it opened on Jan 3, the picture has amassed $342,931 to date. Itsinternational cumulative to date is $27.5m.

Gangs Of New York is scheduled to open in Norway and Sweden on Jan 17;the Netherlands on Jan 23; and Italy on Jan 24.
